Baby sleep cycles are one of the biggest reasons babies wake frequently during the night. If your baby wakes every hour or two, they may simply be struggling to connect their sleep cycles. The good news is that this is a skill babies can learn with the right support and routine. When babies learn to connect their sleep cycles, they are able to transition between cycles without fully waking.
The good news? This is a learnable skill, and it can absolutely be taught in a gentle, supportive way.
Let’s talk about why this happens and what you can do about it.
Understanding Baby Sleep Cycles?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, infant sleep cycles typically last 45 minutes. At the end of each cycle, they briefly enter a lighter stage of sleep before starting the next cycle.
Adults do this too — but we usually roll over and go right back to sleep without noticing.
Some babies, however, fully wake up between cycles and need help getting back to sleep.
That’s when parents start experiencing the dreaded every-2-hour wakeups.

Why Some Babies Wake Fully Between Cycles
Several things can make it harder for babies to connect their sleep cycles.
1️⃣ Sleep Associations
If a baby falls asleep while nursing, being rocked, or being held, they may expect that same help every time they wake between cycles.
When they wake and things feel different, they call for help.
2️⃣ Overtiredness
An overtired baby actually sleeps worse, not better.
When babies stay awake too long, their bodies release cortisol (a stress hormone) which can cause frequent waking.
3️⃣ Inconsistent Sleep Schedules
Irregular nap timing or bedtime can make it harder for babies to settle into predictable sleep rhythms.
Babies thrive on consistency and routine.
The Gentle Way to Teach Sleep Skills
Helping your baby connect sleep cycles does not mean you have to leave them to cry alone.
In fact, many families I work with prefer a gradual and responsive approach.
The goal is to help your baby:
• Fall asleep more independently at bedtime
• Learn that the sleep space is safe and comfortable
• Practice settling between cycles
This process happens step-by-step, with parents supporting their baby while slowly reducing the amount of help needed.

What Your Bedtime Routine Should Look Like
A predictable bedtime routine helps signal to your baby that sleep is coming. The goal is to keep the routine calming and consistent each night.
A simple routine might look like:
🍼 Feed (Notice the feed is FIRST not LAST)
🛁 Bath
🧸 Diaper & pajamas
📖 Short book or song
💤 Into the crib awake
Placing the feeding earlier in the routine helps prevent babies from relying on feeding as the final step to fall asleep. This allows them to practice settling into sleep in their own sleep space.
Consistency is far more important than complexity. A routine that takes 15–20 minutes and happens in the same order each night works beautifully for most families.
When Babies Can Learn to Connect Sleep Cycles
Most babies are capable of longer stretches of sleep by 4–6 months, though every baby is different.
If your baby is older than this and still waking every sleep cycle, they may simply need some guidance and practice.

How Long Does It Take to Improve Sleep?
When parents follow a consistent plan, many families start seeing improvement within a week or two.
The key ingredients are:
✔ A predictable schedule
✔ A calming bedtime routine
✔ A gentle plan for responding to night wakings
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
